How To Study For Greatness?

We have all learned many things from many people. But when you make the commitment to creating and living a great life, you must let go of this habit. When it comes to creating a great life, laser focus is required. In addition to this, you are going to need tremendous certainty. Why?

Let's start with focus. Imagine trying to pick a marble up from a sandbox, while blindfolded. It's going to take you a good amount of time to get this marble and the more you try, the more this marble will get lost in the sand. This is what I mean by, "you need focus." Without focus, you just waste time, rarely accomplish your goal, and usually just make things worse. How does this relate to studying a lot of people. When you study 20 different people or take advice from 20 different sources, there is no focus. And because there is no focus, you will be unable understand or master things. Not because you are incapable of learning many things, but because each mentor/teacher has his her own way of doing things(more on this in the next paragraph). For example, do you really enjoy your dinner when you go to a buffet? Or do you find yourself enjoying a simple restaurant, much more? I know I enjoy the restaurant much more, because not only do the cooks focus on creating great plates as opposed to many plates, you have your focus on one food, not 15. Here's another example. Math teacher A teaches you how to solve a math problem it's the toughest route but also the most effective; they do this for an entire hour. Teacher B, teaches you 3 simple ways that aren't as effective and the hard way that teacher A went over in his class; for 1 hour as well. The student that are most likely to succeed are those of teacher A because he gave his students one method and dedicated an entire hour to it so that his students could get a deep understanding of it. Teacher B's student have too many things to work with and not enough depth. They only spent a couple minutes on each method and so there isn't a deep understanding or any real certainty about which one they should use. Okay so hopefully you now understand what I mean by focus, and why it is so important.

Certainty. So I went over it a little in the last paragraph. We'll use the same teacher example here as well. Teacher B provided his students with 4 methods and Teacher A provided his students with 1 method. You can see how this might become a problem for the students of teacher B. Besides the fact teacher be only went over each method in a matter of minutes, there is still uncertainty. If you give a child 4 different forks, he will probably look at them for a while (because you just introduced uncertainty into his environment). Then eventually he will make up his mind, pick one up and start eating. Let us say you gave another child 1 fork, well the kid will pick it up and start eating right away. You see how that works? When you have got 50 teachers telling you do this and do that. Most of the time, if not all the time you will come across teachers/mentors that don't believe the same thing, and this causes confusion, uncertainty. Let's say you have a teacher and he says, go fast and just do it. Then another teacher says, take your time, let it come to you. Forget which one is correct, if you have 2 teachers telling you this, you aren't going to do anything. And if you do choose one you're going to go in with the other choice in mind and most likely fail.

The solution here is to study as few people as possible and to be very selective with who you study. I will write another article on this in the future. In short though, choose a teacher/mentor that has reached great success. Im not talking about he/she has a million dollars in their account. Im talking about he/she having billions or hundreds of millions. And you also want to check out how they're doing in the 8 areas of life. Spirit, physical/mental health, family, team, mankind, animal/plant life, and the physical universe. It is no good to study an individual who doesn't take those 8 areas of life into account.
